Official Music Video: ‘Sign Of The Times’ by Robin Phillips
Here is the official music video to accompany 'Sign Of The Times', the latest original single from UK singer pianist and songwriter, Robin Phillips. This single is from Robin’s upcoming all-originals album.
The song is inspired by Clarksdale, Mississippi, the birth place of the blues, but partially reimagined as an ageing lady. In many places, old buildings are torn down to make place for newer replacements, but in Clarksdale the history of the city is on show through the many remnants of the past that remain.
In this reimagining of the city as an ageing lady, the song talks about how some try to cover up the signs of their age, but instead we should appreciate and celebrate the experience that is shown in these lines and scars, as they do in many cultures around the world.
The song also considers how Clarksdale's legacy, rather than being written down, or shown off in fancy buildings, flows around the world, through the air, in its music, the Blues.
This video features three different elements:
1) In verse 1, Robin’s long-term friend, poet, and playwright Jehane Markham is featured. She performs the role of the personified Clarksdale MS. Her character, rather than keep fighting the signs of aging, chooses to see the wisdom and experience in her lines, and we’re reminded that in a world of fake online praise, and as you get older, the best spotlight you need is the sunlight on your face when you step outside. Even as the sun sets, the moon can still light up your eyes. Actor Petra Markham, Jehane’s sister, also appears as Jehane’s double.
2) Verse 2 features the city of Clarksdale MS, demonstrating how its history is visible throughout the city, but that the musical heritage of the city (the birthplace of The Blues), still flows through the dedicated blues musicians who live there, many of whom have deep personal connections to the city’s musical historical connections.
Blues musicians in the video include:
Lucious Spiller
Sharo Perry
Bill ‘Howl-n-Madd’ Perry
Watermelon Slim
Robert Kimbrough Sr.
If you recognise any of the other musicians captured here please let us know!
Musicians were captured in venues including Red’s Juke Joint, Morgan Freeman and Bill Luckett’s Ground Zero Blues Club, and Watermelon Slim’s Bluesberry Cafe, all in Clarksdale.
3) Studio footage appears throughout the video. 'Sign Of The Times' was recorded at repmusic studio, near Cambridge, in the UK, with the brass section recorded at Marigny Studios in New Orleans. The recording features some of New Orleans' finest brass players, including one of the city's music legends, Leroy Jones.
Musicians:
Robin Phillips (UK) - vocals, #piano
Leroy Jones (New Orleans) - #trumpet
James Martin (New Orleans) - tenor #saxophone
Dan Ostreicher (New Orleans) - baritone sax
Rob Anstey (UK) - #uprightbass
Alex Best (UK) - #drums

    I have an MK67 with a NOS Telefunken tube. I've used it with my Neve 1073 and it sounds good (solid state) but it sounds stellar with a Telefunken V72 mic pre. The Flea 47 is just a superb mic . I own one along with other expensive mics like U87ai, Telefunken 251, Neumann M149 etc… Hands-down, the Fea 47 is the most versatile tube mic under $8,000 US. I think the retail price on these now is around five or $6000. And worth every penny. So versatile, and so unbelievably musical On everything. Other so-called clones out there like the Warm Audio junk It’s not even in the same league. Not even close.

      Thanks for your comment! It’s a 1970s Yamaha U3, the U3 is slightly taller than the more common U1 and therefore you get the longer bass strings for some additional depth, I love them.

    Can I ask what audio interface you use?

    • @repmusic
      @repmusic Рік тому

      Hi Ray, I’ve always used Focusrite interfaces for a couple of reasons. Firstly they offer so much connectivity (ins and outs), second their customer support in the UK is fantastic and I’ve called on them a couple of times when trying to understand a new complicated routing set up, third they are great value, and in all honesty most interfaces have really low noise and good gain these days. I started with the incredible value Saffire Pro 40, then added a Scarlett 18i20 and linked them via ADAT to get all the digital inputs I needed for my pres with digital outs (UA 4-710, API A2D, and Neve 1073DPD). Last year I upgraded to their Red8Pre just because I thought I should! It is a great sounding interface, the Red software and mobile control is great and I can change monitor mixes and gains (if using the Red’s pres) via the app. I moved the other 2 pres into a hard case and now have 16 ins for mobile recording! But ultimately I think work out exactly what inputs and outputs you need, they do not all have everything, make a design on paper first, then buy the best you can afford, no point in having lovely mics if the pre doesn’t power them well.. Also, different interfaces (even from same company) use different control software e.g you can’t do loop back on the 2nd gen Scarlett but you can on 3rd! Loopback is important for me for recording Zoom interviews straight in the DAW.. cheers!

      Wow!thank you for so much information about focusrite. I’m a beginner for recording, I also have a upright piano and about to buy a pair of sm57, but I heard 57 is hard to be driven by some common used audio interfaces just like Focusrite scarlett 2i2 without preamp. Knowing your equipment, I should up my budget haha~

    • @repmusic
      @repmusic Рік тому

      @@raytsao Scarlett has a pre amp built in, and 57s don’t need phantom power because they are a dynamic mic so would be fine with that, but make sure the piano is warm sounding, otherwise SM57 might not sound great on it.. what is the room like where it is? And what is your budget?

    • @raytsao
      @raytsao Рік тому

      @@repmusic My piano is up against a wall in the living room. I can hear the traffic noise and dogs’ bark clearly so I choose dynamic mic in stead of condenser mic. My budget is about 170 quid for an audio interface.

      @repmusic Рік тому

      @@raytsao personally I would use 2 58s until I can get 2 DPA 4099s, it blows my mind how good those mics are close up, rejecting all ambient noise but not sounding like they are ‘in the box’. Best wishes and send links to your recordings. Don’t forget, the music comes first, then the player, the instrument, the room.. finally the mics and preamps!
